Report: Intelligent DNS a Critical Tool in the DevOps Playbook

Analyst Firm’s Research Demonstrates Need for Next-Generation DNS to Meet Demand for Higher Performing Internet Applications

NEW YORK – March 29, 2016 – Modern DevOps initiatives are changing the way developers build and deploy applications, but given the distributed nature of cloud-based IT infrastructure, application performance and cost management have become even more complex. NS1 today released a Pathfinder Report commissioned from 451 Research, “DNS for a DevOps World,” that recommends modern DNS as an important tool to overcome these challenges.

DNS can be leveraged for application delivery and management in a way that doesn’t require extensive retooling of applications and is cost-effective to deploy and manage, the report found.

  • Performance and efficiency improvements:Recent advancements in Domain Name System (DNS) technologies, including the ability to couple real-time telemetry with automation capabilities, offers online enterprises a unique opportunity to improve performance and increase efficiencies by harnessing the power of a technology that they already use.
  • Automated leverage of network intelligence: Evolving the role of DNS means bringing intelligence in from sources such as real-time server and network performance data; data from real-user measurement systems; other application-specific data with performance or optimization value, and combining that with an automated system for making policy-based traffic management decisions.
  • A comprehensive approach: NS1’s data-driven DNS approach uses API-first architecture and an easy-to-use portal. This enables easy integration with the automation tools used by DevOps and solves service discovery challenges found in distributed cloud environments. The platform can be deployed as a managed, private or hybrid DNS solution, allowing organizations to converge disparate IT infrastructure into a single-pane-of-glass view.

Jim Davis, senior analyst, service providers at 451 Research, said: “Our report reveals that on-demand resources, combined with agile development processes and DevOps, promise to lower the cost of deployment and speed the time to market for all manner of applications. That’s the promise, but with it comes the Cloud challenge – application performance and cost management. DNS, that little-noticed piece of Internet infrastructure, could turn out to be a key tool to realizing the promise of cloud computing.”

Kris Beevers, CEO, NS1 said: “Modern cloud-based IT infrastructure is distributed, which makes application performance and cost containment complex challenges. DNS, foundational technology that every organization uses, can be leveraged as a powerful tool to address performance and cost management. What began as the Internet’s phone book has evolved into a technology that is revolutionizing how companies route traffic and deliver applications.”
