NS1 Nearly Doubles Revenue in 2018

Next Generation DNS and Traffic Management Solutions That Meet Market Demands for Automation and IT Modernization Fuel Adoption and Company Growth

NEW YORK – January 31, 2019 – NS1, announced today it nearly doubled revenue in 2018 with strong customer acquisition in key sectors and 95 percent enterprise customer retention. New products and features that address market demands for improved user experiences, risk mitigation, IT efficiency, and IT modernization are fueling company growth and momentum into 2019.

The need for optimal application performance and operational flexibility is driving adoption of modern approaches, such as microservices, multi-cloud, multi-CDN and edge computing. As companies undergo widespread digital transformation and embrace highly distributed and dynamic application infrastructure, they are turning to NS1’s full suite of next generation DNS solutions to dramatically improve velocity, scale, automation and performance.

In June, NS1 launched Private DNS, a self-hosted solution that delivers fine-grained and automated traffic management for the best application experiences; an API-first approach for rapid change propagation and high-velocity application and infrastructure automation; vendor-agnostic DNS load balancing; and service discovery at cloud scale — all critical for successful modern enterprise application delivery. With the launch of Private DNS, NS1 became the first DNS software provider to span both cloud and self-hosted DNS deployment models, and the addition is propelling growth for NS1 in new markets.

“The launch of Private DNS is driving the largest deals in company history,” said NS1 co-founder and CEO Kris Beevers. “With DNS solutions spanning all deployment models from SaaS to self-hosted, we are uniquely positioned to serve the most progressive companies looking to accelerate DevOps processes and improve performance for their customers. We are also well-positioned to work with more complex enterprises looking to replace traditional DNS as they modernize legacy infrastructure and shed decades of technical debt.”

During 2018, NS1 announced its ability to support Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), a protocol that protects companies from man-in-the-middle attacks by securely signing DNS records across zones. Adoption of this protocol had been lagging for years due to the impact on advanced traffic management features, but NS1’s implementation tackled those barriers by enabling DNSSEC without compromising functionality and performance.

Another new offering, Pulsar 2.0, is helping IT teams automate and more efficiently manage traffic and resources as they deploy to hybrid environments and embrace edge computing strategies. The cloud-based routing engine uses real user monitoring data to enable intelligent traffic management decisions based on resource availability, performance and business logic.

“DNS and DDI have seen little innovation over past decades and it is great to see what NS1 is building to address the challenges of modern infrastructure,” said Eric Hanselman, Chief Analyst with 451 Research. “We are seeing trends toward consolidation and margin optimization of legacy businesses in the enterprise-class DNS ecosystem. The kinds of capabilities that NS1 continues to advance in DNS can be critical for companies seeking performance gains or undergoing digital transformation, and they should leverage them to drive innovation throughout 2019.”

Other noteworthy accomplishments:

Customer retention and growth – The first half of 2018 brought more than 100 new customer wins representing a diverse set of industries, such as e-commerce, technology, legal and financial services, and the momentum continued through the second half. NS1 added a top 50 banking institution, a Fortune 250 automotive firm, a Global 1000 technology firm, ASOS, Denton’s, Cachefly, TripleLift, Synacor, DriveTime, Tealium, Beach Camera/BuyDig and many others to its growing list of major internet, consumer and business applications and enterprise customers, which includes Salesforce, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Nielsen, Squarespace, Pandora, The Guardian and hundreds more.

Company growth – NS1 continued to grow its exceptional executive team, adding Chief Operating Officer Brian Zeman and Vice President of Product Dave Magnoni. The company also expanded its data science division and doubled the size of its sales team in order to accommodate current and anticipated growth from new product offerings.

Expansion of DNS footprint – NS1 now supports 12x more domains than Neustar’s UltraDNS, 21x more than Akamai and 3x more than Oracle Dyn, according to Datanyze.

Industry leadership – NS1 executives continue to take leadership roles in industry organizations, both through advancement projects and by sharing expertise. NS1 led the development of multi-vendor DNSSEC strategy at the Internet Engineering Task Force meeting in Montréal. In addition to co-authoring a Request for Comment draft on the subject, NS1 was instrumental in validating the proposed solution and prototyping code toward the effort. Throughout the year, NS1 experts shared insight and recommendations on topics related to modern infrastructure and application delivery through writing and speaking at significant industry events, such as O’Reilly’s Velocity Conferences. Additionally, NS1 CEO Kris Beevers was named to the Forbes Technology Council.

Award-winning products and team – Vice President of Engineering Renee Orser was recently named to the IDG Ones to Watch List for up-and-coming industry leaders. NS1’s Pulsar was awarded the 2018 Best of Interop Award in the Infrastructure Category, and its implementation of DNSSEC was named a finalist in the Security Category. The company was named a finalist in the DevOps Industry Awards in the category of Leading DevOps Vendor.

Commitment to building critical skills – NS1 remains a trusted expert regarding DNS technology and best practices and is committed to helping IT professionals obtain critical skills required to manage today's distributed and dynamic application delivery infrastructure. In following this mission during 2018, the company launched NS1 Academy, a free, in-depth training and certification program intended to establish proficiency for the novice user and expand current practitioners’ skills and understanding of DNS.
